Modern Description

written by Susanne M Hoffmann

An accumulation of earth and stone is called "mountain" if it exceeds a certain level of height. On planet Earth, this height is measured above sea level (on other planets and under water on Earth: above surrounding ground level). The exact value is a modern convention.
