halo around the Sun
Modern Description

written by Susanne M Hoffmann

A halo is a spherical bow or circle of light in the sky around the Sun or the Moon.

This optical phenomenon occurs when the light of the luminary is broken and inflected within particularly shaped ice crystals. These crystals are thin hexagon plates and and can form in higher clouds under specific conditions (e.g. temperature, preferably in the cold seasons).
